Our values, vision and philosophy
Our centre is located at Waihi and is surrounded by the following landmarks; the goldmine, the Karangahake gorge, the cycle trail and many beautiful walks as well as the nearby Waihi Beach.
Our local Marae is Ngati Waihi nui. The community that is part of our place of learning is known by Elite Early Childhood Education.
Here we believe that children learn best by belonging, being part of a community, being part of the Elite ECE whanau and being valued for who they are and what their interests are.
The learning valued for our children is project/inquiry work derived from their interests, social competency and individual goals to help the child meet their parents’ aspirations.
At our centre we believe that the role of the teacher is to support children’s learning, build positive relationships, to learn to be socially competent and to build an interest in learning for life, to assist the child to become school ready.
The underpinned theories and approaches at our centre include Bronfenbrenner’s ecological cycle, and Vygotsky’s social cultural theory.
Our centre addresses long-term priorities through strategic planning, mid-term priorities through internal review, appraisals and teacher inquiries and short -term priorities through planning, assessment and short-term reviews.
Our centre curriculum is woven to embrace all children. We provide an inclusive curriculum by encouraging participation and positive relationships with all. The identity, language and culture of our children is an integral part of our curriculum design and is supported by whanau time, karakia kai, waiata, kohanga and marae visits and celebrating Matariki. We also celebrate Diwali with the help of our families who are enrolled in the centre. Inclusion of deaf is strengthened by sign language and outside services. Celebrations of loud shirt day, child cancer, daffodil day and plunket.
The children are supported by passionate, caring educators who extend the children’s learning through personal goals that come from parent aspirations, these goals are met by educators creating intentional teaching activities to target specific learning with children. These can also be linked to children’s project/inquiry focus. The learning is documented both through the children’s profile books and on Educa.
The way we support our children’s pathways ton school and kura is by school transition visits, early literacy and early numeracy activities and through teaching social competency.
We are also a member of the Waihi Kahui Ako.
